A Spirit of Hope Returns to Cheadle
Discover Events | About the Cheadle Spitfire During the Second World War, the people of Cheadle raised enough money to purchase a Spitfire aircraft. It was called the "Spirit of Hope," and with sufficient funds remaining, they purchased a speedboat too. It was a coming together of local folk giving something up to help a common purpose important to all. It's also a remarkable tale of how a small town achieved big - something Cheadle has been doing for many years and still

Celebrating International Women's Day with a Women Only Space at COGNEWS
International Women’s Day (IWD) originated from early 20th-century labor movements in North America and Europe, aimed at securing voting rights, better pay, and shorter working hours. It was proposed in 1910 by Clara Zetkin and first celebrated in 1911, with the date later finalised to March 8th. For many years, we made great progress in the UK, but with recent discoveries such as the Epstein and Al Fayed scandals, and alarming reports that numbers of Gen Z men seek to erode

Police Offer Tips for Maintaining Good Neighbour Relations
Neighbour issues can occur in any community; fortunately, most can be resolved through a calm, straightforward conversation. Disagreements happen over a wide range of issues such as noise, parking, boundaries, overgrown trees or hedges, and children playing outside. These matters are usually handled by housing providers, councils, or civil processes rather than police response. Following good guidance will prevent avoidable escalation. Here's what you can do: • Speak to your

Why Our Access to Food Is Under Threat and What We Can Do About It
The UK government has just published its white paper on biodiversity, ecosystem loss and national security. Quite a long title, but what does it mean? And how does it affect us living in Cheadle? This is the first time an issue related to climate change has been cited as affecting national security. The big issue directly affecting the UK is related to possible food shortages for supermarkets that rely on a nationwide road distribution service to deliver to our shops, wherea

Cheadle Foodbank Receives a Lion's Share Donation
On Wednesday, 25th February, Cheadle Foodbank was presented with a cheque for £250 to help run the service by Cheadle Lions. The food bank has been in the town for 12 years and is based at the Guild Hall. They have given out over 125 tonnes of food over that period. They are staffed entirely by volunteers and also provide

Warm Water Swimming to Beat the Winter Blues
For years, local residents have expressed concerns that the pool at South Moorlands Leisure Centre has been too cold for a comfortable swim. As there is no local alternative, when several residents informed us about improvements in the temperature, we decided to investigate. Steve, the leisure centre manager, told COGNEWS that the swimming pool is being kept at 27–28°C, with the temperature moving a little higher when catering for their disabled visitors at the weekend. Cheadle Historical Society - A Lesson in Winning a Propaganda War
Dates for your diary Thursday 15th January 2026 saw Cheadle Historical Society members and visitors gather together, filling the New Life building on Tape Street. They'd come out on a dark, cold evening to listen to Philip Brough, a Cheadle historian and long-term friend of the Society. His presentation, The Biggest Aspidistra, was a story of the British transmitting propaganda to Germany, one of Britain's best-kept secrets. Millions are aware of Lord Haw-Haw, but our success

A New Notice Board for Cheadle Town Centre

The new addition will provide a prominent space for local community organisations to provide vital information for residents and visitors. Project managed by former town councillor Paul Keeling, this has taken an extraordinarily long time to complete, and without his tenacity and creativity, we would not have it at all.
