Almost 800 years of market trading came to an end two years ago when SMDC purchased Cheadle Market. Today, they are opening the doors to everyone to see the market and have their say on the future of this important element of town life. Can it be completed before the likely dissolution of SMDC, which should be decided by October? Will SMDC manage to get their development plans approved now that they don't control the planning process? Might Cheadle Town Council aim to take this onboard even though they lack the legal authority to operate it? While the answers remain uncertain, COGNEWS will be here to follow the process every step of the way.
SMDC wants to hear the thoughts of residents, businesses, and the community as the plans for the Market Hall and Market Square develop and is inviting everyone to come along to an ideas fair on Saturday, 20 June.
Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for Regeneration and Planning, Councillor Darren Price, said: "Please come and join us at the weekend to tell us what you think of our plans and how you’d like to see this area of the town develop. Let’s work together to deliver something the town can be proud of.”
Attendees are asked to meet at The Guildhall at 12pm for an introduction and welcome refreshments. Tours of the Market Hall will then take place at 12.30pm and 2.30pm, and children's creative workshops will be taking place throughout.
