Cheadle "Town" Clock at St. Giles the Abbot

Saving Time - The Story of our Town Clock

The Town Clock, which sits in the Tower of St Giles the Abbot Church, at the end of the High Street, is almost 200 years old. It was built in Cheadle, at number 41 High Street, better known today as our town's Butcher's Shop - Wooliscroft. There has been a butchers shop at number 41, for over 100 years.

The clock was purchased for a price of 62 pounds 15 shillings and 6 pence in 1825, and is still ticking away, giving accurate time some 199 years later. For over 30 years, the responsibility of winding the clock has been held by local resident and semi-retired engineer, Jim Plant. It's well worth stopping near the hour, to hear this wonderful part of local history in action. Sadly it's no longer possible to climb the tower safely, due to current health and safety regulations. St Giles the Abbot Vicar, the Rev, Garry Higgs is running events to raise funds to install an electrical winder for the clock. The cost of this is around £15,000. Visit our Events page for details of fundraising events.

From COG

We believe that honesty and transparency makes us a better organisation because it enables our members and readers to better understand and support our work. Here you'll find previous additions of COGNEWS, minutes, accounts etc.

2

From Governance

We believe that good communications should always be at the heart of everything we do as a community. Here you'll find Local Authority Documents which affect our town.

3

From Members

All COG members are not for profit organisations, sometimes without the budget or structure to communicate information to guide their growth. This is a space for all members to share their important documents with the local community.

Should we host a Cheadle Swap Shop?

A lovely community activity popular in rural areas across Europe is a community swap shop. Essentially, if you have an item or service to swap for another item or service, you can list it. If we were to run this we would ask for a small donation (not essential) which then helps us deliver the site, train our people and bring better services to our town. What do you think, should we do it?
