A Cure for a Cold Lonely Winter: Online Dating
POV: Bernie's Story As a reporter for COGNEWS, I come across many people who, through no fault of their own, spend the Christmas and New Year season on their own. This may be due to the loss of a partner or having gone through the breakup of a relationship. The feeling of isolation can be quite painful, especially after a Christmas spent with relatives. In this modern world, we don’t have the social connections we once had, and certainly in Cheadle isolation can be quite seve

More thefts: At the Fruit & Veg shop
On Saturday, 10th January, another theft occurred in a Cheadle shop. This time at Fresh Produce, a popular fruit, veg, and plant store on the Tape Street car park. We were told that a man looked around the trees and plants, then pulled up a face mask and ran away with a potted bay tree. CCTV footage shows him almost tripping over a step. The staff have posted the incident on Facebook because they had a Christmas tree stolen a few weeks ago, and posting the incident on Faceboo

Walk Like a Penguin or Pavement Skiing?
With temperatures low and wet or snowy weather continuing, falling on ice is a major concern for many of us. We've seen a lot of talk about which way is best to walk, and with new NHS advice, we're asking the question: which way is better? On a recent visit into town to deliver our new publication, Pocket COG, the only safe option was to walk. Our discussions at COG are long and varied, generally pleasant, and on this day, we found ourselves discussing the new NHS advice to w

Art in Action - Creating Community Connections
If Staffordshire is known as the country's creative county, then Staffordshire Moorlands should be considered its crown jewel. This is not only because of the amazingly diverse range of art found throughout the moorlands but also due to the immense efforts of an organisation called Outside Arts. You may already know them; if not, your path will have crossed at some point with some element of their work. They provide funding, training, and every other kind of support imaginabl

Wonderful Winter Walks - A New www?
Why Walking? Path Blockers Where to Begin Walking Q & A Cheadle Walks Many of us use the start of a new year to review things we'd like to change, and taking a little time to reflect on the last year and how we might improve our lives can be greatly beneficial. We might want to lose weight, increase exercise, reduce spending, or spend less time doomscrolling. Whatever our plans, something as simple as taking a brisk walk outside can help support our resolutions.

How Not to Let Wildlife Become the ‘Living Dead’
Some species in Staffordshire may look healthy today, but without connected habitats, they face a silent decline. These 'living dead' species survive in isolated patches of woodland, wetland, or grassland, unable to sustain viable populations long term. Why it matters Fragmented landscapes mean fewer chances for wildlife to thrive. The Local Nature Recovery Strategy aims to reverse this by restoring and linking habitats across Staffordshire. Savers Health & Beauty in Cheadle Stands Up to Thief
Earlier this month, Manager Stacy observed a customer acting suspiciously. She asked, “What are you doing?” He replied, “I am not pinching.” Stacy told COGNEWS that those people who say they are not stealing are usually the ones that do. The thief pushed his way towards the till, stole some fragrances, swore at her, and said, “If I want to pinch, I am going to pinch.” Stacy tried to stop him from leaving the shop, and he said, “I am going to punch you,” which resulted in Stac

A Cheadle Resident Wins Big
It's been reported to COGNEWS that a local resident has won a life-changing sum of money on the National Lottery last week. The unnamed resident purchased their ticket in a Cheadle High Street store and was reported by the local store owner to be elated—dancing happily around the shop. Who wouldn't? We wish them every blessing with their newfound wealth, which no doubt will be a huge seasonal blessing for their family and friends too. A Cheadle Resident Wins Big - created 8.1

High Street Footpath closed without notice
If you’re venturing down into Cheadle today please be aware that the walkway between the Card Factory and Coral is blocked by a commercial rubbish bin from the High Street end and with tape at the car park end. We couldn’t see a footpath closure notice and asked the scaffolder if they had one. We were told that they had, but they’d forgotten to bring it. Further investigations revealed that their telephone number on the flatbed trucks doesn’t work and we rang several compani

Senior Council Leaders Spotted in Cheadle
Monday, the 1st of December, saw SMDC leaders and County Council deputy leader Marin Murray descend on Cheadle High Street, Mike Gledhill and Andrew Stokes among their number. Why they are here, we cannot tell, what we do know is they walked past the Empty market hall, crossed and over the road in the direction of Cross Street. Perhaps tonight’s full council meeting will reveal useful information as to developments in our town. Senior Council Leaders Spotted in Cheadle - 1.1
