This week marks the start of the local football season, and Cheadle Rotary Club has made sure that three local teams will look their finest on the pitch.

On the sunny but cooler Saturday afternoon of the 15th of August, we met with Ken Horleston and Sue Edwards from Cheadle Rotary Club to find out more about their work. The club had a discussion about how they make sure that local people know about their work and how they fundraise to support local charities. One idea was to sponsor a local football team, which would keep their name in front of players, their families, and supporters. Following a contact with the members, they’re actually sponsoring three teams for the next two years: Cheadle Town Seniors, Cheadle Town Under 16s, and Staffordshire Moorlands Upcoming Under Sevens. The Cheadle Town teams wear a rather smart green, seen above.

Ken told us that he has been a member of Cheadle Rotary Club since 1986, and in the 40 years that he’s been a member, aside from the five years he was abroad, he’s always had a formal role. This year he is the Secretary and has always really enjoyed each role he's undertaken. Ken and Sue told us that raising the money isn’t too difficult; people like the Rotary Club and are generally happy to give, but finding places to pass the funds onto can sometimes be a little bit more challenging. They have contacts who have received Rotary funding before and know other organisations that would benefit from a funding boost which helps.
Rotary is a global network of over 1.2 million members in more than 200 countries, including
business, professional, and community leaders who volunteer their skills and resources to address
local and global challenges. Founded in 1905 Rotary began as a way for professionals
to meet and exchange ideas, and it has since evolved into a humanitarian and service-focused
organisation Rotary members, known as Rotarians, engage in a wide range of activities.
Its motto, “Service Above Self,” reflects the organisation’s commitment to making a positive difference
in the world. Rotary connects people of action to solve problems, promote peace, and
improve communities, combining local engagement with a global perspective to create lasting
change.
Cheadle Rotary Club was founded in 1949 by Doctor George Saint and over the years have
supported many local organisations and individuals. Locally they have donated to the Women’s
Refuge, Disable swimming, Guides and Scouts and are also the Trustees to the Consall Scout
Camp. They have also sponsored individuals for sporting and academic activities. Internationally they
support the eradication of Polio and shelter boxes for disasters in the world.
They meet on a Thursday evening at Whiston Hall Golf Club, with the exception of the first
Thursday of each the month. They meet at 7.00 pm for a two course meal prior to the meeting.
