Stand Up Against Street Harassment Training Program Launched
L’Oréal Paris and the Suzy Lamplugh Trust have announced a partnership to roll out the expert approved Stand Up Against Street Harassment bystander intervention training programme in the UK free of charge, with a goal to train 10,000 people per year through online and in-person workshops.
Bystander intervention is the term for witness action to defuse situations and make public spaces safer. The Stand Up training programme focuses on the “5 D’s” intervention programme originally pioneered by international NGO Right to Be. It encourages those who witness harassment to act by 1) Distracting the perpetrator, 2) Delegating by asking for help, 3) Documenting the harassment, 4) Directing by speaking up and 5) Delaying by providing comfort. ~~Research
In 2021, an IPSOS survey in the UK revealed 86% of us do not know what to do when we witness street harassment happening (1). The partnership with the Suzy Lamplugh Trust means people in the UK can now complete in-depth workshops to create a community of bystanders who are confident in tackling street and public harassment when they witness it.
Research has also shown that the need to educate on street harassment has never been more apparent: 93% of UK women and 90% of UK men believe there is a lack of training on how to intervene when you witness sexual harassment but 86% of UK witnesses who have intervened reported that their action improved the situation.

Hello everyone,
COGNEWS continues to go from strength to strength with over 50 organisations now sending in their news regularly; an average of 3 daily posts and new lead stories for each segment at least once a week. We are thankful to all who contribute to our vibrant town. Sponsorship is starting to take shape, which is vital for our continued work, and we think the website is looking/performing better than ever.
That said, there will be some further category and style changes which will better help people navigate the online pages and enrich the publications. Email subscriptions are live, and we are starting to see the benefits of this. The print copy continues to be a challenge, with both the production and the distribution teams struggling the past few weeks due to a shortage of volunteers. We are currently addressing how we best reach our audiences in a cost-effective and timely way. Part of that rethink is the removal of many of the COGBOXES, which will soon be replaced with posters, surgeries, and workshops and member-led print. This will better connect the team to our town and enable the members to make money from COGNEWS, something which we always intended. This will not affect the sponsored copies, and we will be seeking postal subscribers in earnest from the end of March.
Thank you for supporting our community group, and please continue to steer us towards a better town.
