Established businesses questioned Councillor Charlesworth recently about why stall holders in Cheadle Market receive free parking permits while their businesses do not have permits to park in the Tape Street car park. The district council website clearly states that a business can obtain a parking permit for Well Street Car Park for as low as £1.5 per day, allowing the short stay park to be available for shoppers and visitors.
Councillor Charlesworth spoke with a stall-holder who mentioned that they lost parking spaces when bollards were installed in the market square. Now, they pay for the first three hours at Tape Street Park. This has led to tension among some of the businesses. During a town council meeting, Councillor Plant, who also serves as the chairman of the district council, was unaware of these free parking permits and plans to investigate and report back to the full council. Business owners plan to attend that council meeting to hear the solution to this issue.
