If you're keen on local history, attending meetings at your local historical society can be an excellent way to stay informed and connect with like-minded people. Cheadle boasts one of the oldest historical societies in the area and welcomes you to join their winter program of events.

Winter Programme 2025-2026
All meetings start at 7.30 p.m. prompt and are at New Life Church, Tape Street, Cheadle. **EXCEPT SEPTEMBER.
September 18th This meeting is at Wellspring Church, Chapel St. Cheadle.
It follows a Cheadle Discovery Group meeting (starting at 6:45 p.m.), where the logo and information for a programme of events connected with Cheadle in WWII will be launched.
Caroline Spiers. WWII Air Traffic Auxiliary. Her mother, Rita Baines, delivered aircraft from factories to airfields. Plus, other interesting information about Rita.
Subs are due this evening, £10.00 membership, £3.00 guests per visit. Please help by having the correct money.
October 16th.
David Slade, early industry in the Churnet Valley. Including Alton, Froghall, and Oakamoor. Well-researched and presented local history by David, a long-standing committee member.
November 20th.
Marion Armstrong, The remarkable VAD Nurses of WWI.
Voluntary Aid Detachment, formed by the Red Cross and St John’s Ambulance in 1909.
December 18th.
Barbara Grzegorzek.
Leek and the Polish Connection. Their arrival after Monte Cassino and their integration into the community. We will have a carol before and after Barbara’s talk.
January 15th.
Philip Brough. The Biggest Aspidistra! Britain’s Wartime Propaganda Programme. Radio transmissions were beamed from England to Germany
to cause military deception. Another fascinating insight into wartime history from our local historian Philip.
February 19th.
Julie Arnold. The Caldon & Uttoxeter Canals. Their importance locally in the transportation of coal, limestone, lime, brass, and more.
March 19th.
Jake Price & Stephen Waring. The History of Alton Towers Gardens. A massive development started by the fifteenth Earl of Shrewsbury.
The sixteenth Earl completed the task and erected the Choragic Monument as a memorial to him. “He Made the Desert Smile”
April 16th.
AGM + Our Chairman Mike Plant will present a talk on the lesser-known local large houses that have been demolished.
