When you look up at the Cheadle Market Hall building you see a plastic clock on the outside of an historic building, but behind this modern piece, which isn't the best at showing the time, there's a story.
A few years ago the market square was "upgraded". This involved tarmacing the traditional cobblestones and the creation of the hutch style shop stalls within the building. Part of that upgrade was the removal of the Original Clock, made by British Company Gent. Ken Riley, our town watchmaker noticed it being removed, and was horrified to see it being thrown into a skip. He rushed out to the workman and asked what they were doing with such an historic timepiece? He was told that they were getting rid of the old thing, and replacing it with a nice new plastic one, one that wouldn't rust. Ken was horrified at a piece of Cheadle history just being thrown into a skip, so he rescued and restored it to full working order. It's sat in his basement ever since, hoping to be put back in its rightful place.
If you would like the old clock to go back up please let Councillor Swindlehurst, who is leading the Market Project, know your view. We would then at least be able to read the time and it's a great piece of local history, lovingly restored. When you're in town a visit to Ken's lovely shop on the High Street is time well spent.
