Leisure Centre Market and More - Our Man in Leek

Leisure Centre, Market and More. Our Man in Leek

The Chair Person of SMDC is our very own Ian Plant.

Ian has been a Cheadle Town Councillor and a Staffordshire Moorlands District Councillor for many years. He works hard on our behalf and is actively involved with some of our fantastic local projects such as Cheadle in Bloom, Cheadle Arts Festival and Party in the Park.

Ian has kindly agreed to share the news from SMDC’s plans for our growing town, recently he told COGNEW a few things we've all been wondering about.

The Market

Cheadle market has been neglected for many years, now under district council ownership, repairs can be made.   SMDC agents are currently tendering for the work which includes tackling what looks like trees growing from the roof.  Ian is saddened that some stall holders have left, and is excited about the future of our market.

The Leisure Centre

South Moorlands Leisure Centre is still very much a work in progress, with everything is being carefully considered, Ian told us that he was impressed at what has been achieved at Halesowen Leisure Centre where a two phase development of the old leisure centre now includes and accessible wellness suite using power assisted exercise technology to provide a low impact, full-body workout circuit for exercisers who want to work smart and effectively. This is particularly valuable for older adults and those living with long term health conditions. The contemporary facility boasts two pools - a 25 metre, six-lane swimming pool and a learner pool with spectator provision, fitness classes from 12 and above, and Planet Play a two-tiered soft play section which is filled with state of the art equipment including three slides and a unique cyber tower. This is a project which is going to take a number of years to develop but will provide the leisure facilities our town needs.

Out and About

Ian will be supporting the reinstatement of the footpath to Donkey Lane and will make sure that is completed correctly. He is concerned about the ongoing accidents taking place at the Huntsman Junction, and has sent a letter to County Councillor, in charge of Transport, Mark Deaville, asking for improvement to the signage and road markings to be made urgently.

Churchill Road Rec

Lastly Ian informed COGNews that the Churchill Road Recreation Ground will have a public consultation from a specialised company, who will consider not only Churchill Road residents views, but also those residents from the new housing developments. This will then follow Town Council protocol and will give everyone an opportunity to have their say.

Ian would like to remind us, as Bonfire Night approaches, fireworks not only upset pets, but older people as well, he urges us all, if possible go to an organised event instead and to stay safe.

We've seen first hand the tireless ways Ian works on behalf of our community, often unseen, we'd like to take the opportunity to thank him for all he does!
