Title: Spotlight on Business A & C Stores

Updated: Oct 9, 2024

Local Cheadle Store ST10

In many towns across Britain the local shop has disappeared. It's my pleasure to report that Cheadle North still has its corner shop. Although, not actually on a corner A & C stores, on Froghall Road sells everything we might need conveniently, without making a big trip to the supermarket. Popular with young and old alike they open early and close, you can drop off a Vinted parcel or post a letter.

I asked the owner Ram what was his secret? "We keep prices down and provide anything customers want," said Ram. "If we don't have it in stock then we get it the next day." He told me that he finds local people happy and supportive of his business which means a lot to him and his staff. Ram has a real interest in local people and the shop is also popular because of the easy parking and easy walking distance for many local people.

At this point, in the interview, his expression changed. He tells me that it's really difficult for elderly people and young school children to cross the road to get to the store. The increased traffic flow generated by the new housing estates, in addition to the existing traffic, is a problem. He firmly believes we really need a zebra crossing for Froghall Road. Councillor Charlesworth did apply on behalf of resident for permission, but this was refused

Ram needed extra storage space to accommodate his customers needs, and applied for planning permission from Staffordshire Moorlands District Council for a single story storeroom extension which is the correct process to follow. He described the process as time consuming and even with the architect keeping him updated every step of the way, it still took 12 months for him to get permission, needing the expertise and support of two councillors who represented him at the planning committee. His advice to other businesses, wishing to expand is to allow plenty of time for planning.

While I was visiting the shop the local fire engine pulled up outside and we were greeted by friendly local firemen buying a few quick snacks. This business is truly part of our Cheadle community, run by a nice gentleman and I wish him many years of success and happiness in our community.

Do you think we need a crossing patrol on Froghall Road? Please share your comment or experience below. COG can then consider if and how we might take this forward.
