Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will no longer receive updates, and while you can install Windows 11 on your device, it may not function properly in certain situations. What are our options if we prefer not to replace our computer?

If you have a spare 32GB USB stick, you can use it to run a different operating system on your machine. I've found Linux Mint to be quite similar to Windows. Be sure to back up your data first, as you will lose everything. Insert your USB into the machine, then search for Linux Mint in your browser and download the Cinnamon version, which is compatible with most computers that are 5-7 years old. Scroll down the webpage until you find "mirror" and choose a UK mirror copy. After downloading, go to the Start menu, scroll to M, and open the Microsoft Store. In the search bar, type 'Rufus', install it, and open it once installed. Ensure the boot selection is set to 'disk or ISO image', then click the 'select' button and locate the Linux file you downloaded in the Downloads folder. Press 'start' at the bottom of the app. Make sure 'write in ISO image' is selected, then click 'yes', followed by 'ok', to create a bootable USB. Once the process is complete, you can remove the USB stick and use it to run Linux on your computer.
If this seems too complex, you can purchase a Linux USB online for £10, which includes instructions. Once installed, you can use software like Thunderbird Mail or Firefox Browser and operate your printers. I have two printers - one Epson and one Brother - and both work well. Connecting to the internet is straightforward. Word processing is also simple with LibreOffice. If this feels overwhelming, there's still a computer shop in our charming town that might assist you. Additionally, the software is similar to COGNEWS, relying on small donations to continue, so don't be stingy with Linux.
COGNEWS is not liable if any of these instructions fail to work. If in doubt, seek professional assistance.
