During April Staffordshire Wildlife Trust competed in their third City Nature Challenge, an annual competition between locations all over the world to see how many wild species their citizens can spot over the space of four days. In Staffordshire, 167 people made 12,059 observations of 1,430 different species across the county, surpassing the 2024 challenge totals.

This is a lot of observations to make in just four days and helps Staffordshire Ecological Records monitor species populations and distribution around the county. Not only that, but they have even discovered some rare visitors such as a darkling beetle (pictured), which has never been recorded in the county before.

You can read more about what was discovered on their website. While 12,000 records is a huge milestone to celebrate, the Trust would love to see more people getting involved on their local patch.
