Did you know that Cheadle boasts one of Staffordshire's oldest historical societies? Founded in 1951, this very busy but friendly group has a lot to offer. They meet 11 times each year, combining interesting speakers as well as visiting locations in the summer months. Everyone is welcome to join them at any meeting, and they have a full and varied winter programme through to April 2026. Members pay £10 for the year, and visitor fees are £3 each visit.
The next meeting will be held at Wellspring Methodist Church, 43 Chapel St, Cheadle ST10 1DU on Thursday, September 18th, at 7:30 pm prompt. There is ample free car parking opposite the Church on the Tape St. car park.
The society will welcome Caroline Spiers, who will tell the story of her mother, Rita Baines. She joined the ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary) in WWII, delivering planes from factories to airfields. The ATA was established in 1939; it played a vital role in the war effort, and civilian pilots freed up R.A.F. pilots for combat.

These pilots were expected to fly any plane with no training. There were no radios or sat-nav aids, a job for a special type of person. Visitors and members will also discover more about Rita's fascinating life.
Caroline is an accomplished speaker and a very interesting evening is guaranteed.
