Essential Tips for Protecting Our Feathered Friends this Winter

Protecting Our Feathered Friends this Winter

As summer ends, it's important to consider the birds that remain in our gardens through winter. With dropping temperatures and food becoming scarce, insect-eating birds look for alternative diets, some species migrate, and foraging habits change for those that remain. We can help by offering additional food sources during these leaner times.

While we are warm in our beds during cold nights, garden birds must find shelter in hedges or tree bark. They fluff their feathers for warmth, but food is limited this time of year. With dwindling numbers, it's beneficial to provide food for them. Peanuts, suet pellets, mealworms, and sunflower seeds help birds build a fat layer for insulation.

If you lack a bird table, you can create one using a smooth pole with a 30 cm table attached on top. Ensure the table is clean to avoid disease and remove old food. Fresh water is also essential daily. For those in flats, a window sill feeder can enhance your view. Finally, remember to clean bird boxes with boiling water to prevent springtime diseases, using rubber gloves to protect your health.
