Addressing Anti-Social Behaviour at The Green

A resident near the petrol station told COGNEWS that there is now a public nuisance of late-night drinking and broken bottles outside their house near The Green in Cheadle. One neighbor reported 72 bottles under a hedge. Inspecting the bottles proved that they were coming from the 24-hour petrol station, which has a license to sell alcohol for that period.
A resident said, “It’s quite difficult living nearby, with lights blazing all night, apparently due to health and safety reasons,” said the resident. “And now, with late-night drinking just outside, life is being made difficult, with shouting sometimes at 3 a.m.”
Alcohol licensing laws regarding drunk behaviour in the UK, particularly under the Licensing Act 2003, place strict legal responsibilities on license holders to prevent both the service of alcohol to drunk individuals and disorderly conduct on their premises. But it is feared that drinks are still being sold to people with alcohol dependence problems or to those wishing to extend their drinking after closing time.

Even the lovely flowers nearby, provided by our Cheadle in Bloom volunteers, have been damaged by this late-night activity.
Town Councillor Michelle Wells is responding by collecting information via the Freedom of Information Act and is drafting a letter of complaint to the licensing authority at SMDC.
COGNEWS will keep readers informed on this latest anti-social trend, and if you are experiencing similar issues, please let us know.
