COGNEWS has been informed that work on the new health and wellbeing centre in Brough Park, Leek is now entering the final phase ahead of the summer re-opening.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council is leading the project to expand and modernise the centre and develop the external area to encourage people to be active in a less formal setting.

Much of the interior work is now complete, and the upgrade to the town’s electricity infrastructure has also finished meaning that the project can now move on to the testing and commissioning stage in readiness for the re-opening.

Councillor Matt Swindlehurst, Cabinet member for Leisure and Tourism, said: “It’s exciting to be marking another milestone as we move into the final stages of this major redevelopment – and the centre is already looking absolutely fantastic!

“Now that the electricity upgrade works are complete, we can start testing here on site before we start filling the pools, bringing the gym equipment in, and all those things that will turn this fabulous space into the state-of-the-art centre we’ve promised.

“It’s going to change the leisure and wellbeing landscape in Leek and the whole of the Staffordshire Moorlands and I can’t wait to open the doors and welcome everyone back. We all know that being more active underpins good physical and mental health and to have this indoor and outdoor amenity in the heart of the town ensures we’ll all have access to quality sporting, leisure and social activities that support healthier lifestyles now and for years to come.”

Last week Cllr Swindlehurst said "I particularly want to thank the leisure working group, and its chair Councillor Ian Plant, for its important contribution to this very exciting development. It demonstrates the value of positive cross party working, particularly with regards to these large capital projects."

The redevelopment includes:

  • A new 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool and a larger teaching pool

  • A larger gym and second group exercise studio and a new, dedicated indoor cycling studio

  • A community wellness suite with space to expand referral based services

  • An indoor/soft adventure play area

  • New reception space with toilets, café seating and servery

The general manager has been appointed and the MyActive team are now starting to recruit people to work in the new centre. Anyone interested in being part of the team can explore current opportunities and apply online via the MyActive Careers page.

Adam Cope, General Manager of MyActive Leek, said: “We are proud to be working alongside Staffordshire Moorlands District Council and our partners to bring this facility to life. This is a really important moment, not just for MyActive, but for the whole community in Leek.

“What’s being created here goes far beyond a traditional leisure centre. It’s a space designed to support people’s health, wellbeing and connection to their community in a way that feels welcoming and accessible to everyone.

“As we get ready to open the doors, our focus is on how this centre will improve lives through movement – whether that’s someone taking their first steps into activity, managing a long-term health condition, or simply finding a place to feel part of something.”

The redevelopment has been funded by UK Government, the District Council, Sport England through the National Lottery, and Salix who are helping to fund the decarbonisation measures.
