Sunshine Lady Hands Back Her Sunglasses.

There are changes happening at the Sunshine club which are nothing to do with the weather. Instead after many years of service, Brenda Mills who runs the Cheadle Sunshine Club is handing back her sunglasses and retiring from her post.

"We've recently returned from a 5 day holiday to Weymouth", club organiser Brenda, told COGNEWS. "I had a room overlooking the sea", Brenda continued. It's been reported to us that she was regularly on the dance floor until 11.30pm. Brenda is 87 years of age and puts many of us younger folk to shame with her energy levels and enthusiasm for life.

The SunShine Club started in 2005 because crime levels were high, residents of the Hammersley Hayes Suburb got together to form the Hammersley Hayes Residential Group. Three sections were developed, one as an Action group, another as a lunch club and the third as a children's club.

We were given a house to rent by the District Council and every week we had bingo, raffles and birthday parties for the children. They even built a conservatory for us and we could accommodate 40 residents. Brenda continues, I did the book keeping and have done so ever since. In 2018 the property was taken over by Your Housing Group and we had to move to a room in the Guild Hall which we still rent today. We then changed our name to the Sunshine Club and still run raffles, bingo and "Bonus Ball" an activity where 50 percent of takings go back into the club. We meet on the second Thursday of each month and our oldest member is 97 years of age Joan Titterton. Meals are provided by the wonderful Homelink service.

The club is going through a management change as Brenda retires, and does have a waiting list for new members. If you would like to go on the waiting list, Heather can be contacted on Tel: 01538 751205. As the Sunshine Lady hands back her sunglasses we'd like to wish all members many more sunny days.
