Staffordshire County Council's Trading Standards team are reminding people to be allergy aware when dining out. It’s vital that meals are safe for everyone, especially those with food allergies. Officers are also working with local food businesses to ensure they understand their responsibilities and comply with allergen labelling regulations.
Natasha’s Law, introduced in 2021, requires full labelling of foods and ingredients, with any of the 14 major allergens emphasised in the list. It means anyone eating in a restaurant or takeaway has the right to receive allergen information, either in written format or verbally. The law also requires businesses to label all food known as pre-packed for direct sale.
County Councillor Victoria Wilson, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture at Staffordshire County Council said: "We want everyone to enjoy their meals without any health concerns. It's important that diners inform restaurant staff about any allergies they have and that restaurants and food outlets take all necessary precautions to prevent cross-contamination.
"Our Trading Standards team are dedicated to supporting businesses in maintaining high standards of food safety and we always encourage them to review their allergen management practices and ensure their staff are well-trained in handling allergen information.”
For those with severe allergies dining out, officers have offered the following advice:
Inform the restaurant: Always notify the restaurant of any allergies when making a reservation and upon arrival.
Ask questions: Don't hesitate to ask about ingredients and preparation methods.
Check the menu: Look for allergen information on the menu or ask for an allergen menu.
Be prepared: Carry any necessary medication in case of an emergency.
