Menopause in the workplace
Although perimenopause and the menopause itself are increasingly discussed in mainstream media, there still seems to be a taboo around the topic, especially in the workplace, leaving many to struggle in silence.
The menopause can have a big impact on the daily lives of employees and, in turn, a negative impact on their performance and attendance at work. Some symptoms may last for several years and can include anxiety, reduced concentration, sleep disturbance, hot flushes and heavy periods – all of which can be both physically and emotionally distressing
Organisations should treat the menopause as they would any other health issue, not only to break the stigma and taboo surrounding the menopause at work, but to create an inclusive environment where employees and managers feel able to discuss any reasonable adjustments that may be needed.
Top tips to support staff include:
1. Raise Awareness: Provide training for managers and staff to recognise menopause symptoms and understand their impact.
2. Create an Open Dialogue: Encourage employees to discuss menopause-related concerns without fear of stigma or embarrassment. Consider appointing menopause champions or support groups.
3. Review Policies: Ensure HR policies address menopause, such as flexible working, sickness absence, and reasonable adjustments.
4. Provide information: Signpost to sites such as the Staffordshire Health App Finder to find trusted and reviewed apps, also visit the Workplace Health Staffordshire website to find menopause related resources.
