On Saturday, Cheadle High Street was shut down for several hours to enable Staffordshire Fire and Rescue to manage and resolve an incident on Cross Street.

Local Resident Survives 50ft Plunge into Abandoned Well

A local man fell into an abandoned well located behind the dry cleaners on Cross Street. The High Street was closed to accommodate the four emergency units required for his rescue.

We have learned that the resident was clearing the area behind the shop to install a bike shed when the accident occurred. The well was approximately 50 feet deep, and his fall was softened by 4 feet of water at the bottom. Fortunately, he had his mobile phone with him, and despite having difficulty using it in the cold water, he managed to send a message for help. This process was lengthy due to a weak signal and frequent disconnections.

He was taken to the hospital with suspected spinal injuries, and as far as we know, he is recovering there. We wish him a speedy recovery.

No maps indicated a well at this location, which was a complete surprise to everyone involved.
