Improvements under way or coming up soon

Crews continue to make repairs and improvements right across the Moorlands over the coming weeks and months.

This includes surfacing and repairs to the road, footpaths and kerbs, traffic lights and sometimes replacing manhole covers and grids too.

The following improvements are due to take place:

  • Major structural maintenance works will commence on the A520 Main Road through Wetley Rocks in June with crews focusing on drainage, kerbing repairs and footway and carriageway resurfacing. The works our anticipated to take 3 to 4 months to complete.

  • Crews will also be carrying out much needed preventative surface treatment works, to prolong the life of existing roads, throughout June and July on nearly 30 roads including other sections of the A520 at Moorville, Cellarhead/Wetley Rocks, Birchall along with other areas within the Moorlands district including Bradnop, Warslow, Butterton, Leek, Biddulph and Biddulph Moor.

  • 16 June 2025 sees the start of a large programme of new supply work being undertaken by National Grid in Mill Street, Belle Vue and Westwood Road in Leek. The work is expected to be completed in September 2025.

Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, Peter Mason said "Good roads are incredibly important to our communities, and we are doing everything we can to improve our highways, listen to people's concerns, and make people aware of our priorities around highways."

"This includes working closely with parish councils and community organisations to make sure their concerns are also being dealt with. Our crews are working hard to maintain and improve our highways network, and I want to thank you for your patience while we carry out these important works."

Essential repairs underway in Cellarhead

Highways crews are carrying out some essential maintenance and repairs work at the Cellarhead Crossroads, Kingsley Road and Leek Road.

Crews will also be fixing potholes along with damaged kerbs and ironworks in the week-long blitz.  People who use the road will know how busy it is, so will notice the smoother journeys when completed.

Some temporary traffic lights, road closures and diversions are in place to make sure the work can be done safely and crews would like to pass on their thanks to people for their patience and co-operation during the works.

Improvements underway or coming up soon

Crews are carrying out repairs and improvements right across the district over the coming weeks and months.

This usually includes surfacing and repairs to the road, footpaths and kerbs, traffic lights and sometimes replacing manhole covers and grids too.

The following improvements are due to take place:

  • Highways repairs and maintenance works on Westminster Road in Leek, March/April.

  • Pre-surface dressing patching at Mount Pleasant in Leek, April

  • Highway Repairs and Maintenance works at Shaw Place in Leek, March/April

  • Multiple repairs in the Haregate area of Leek including Novi Lane, Argles Road, Horsecroft Crescent and Thorncliffe View, April

  • Improvements on Hook Lane, Upper Leigh, April

  • Improvements on Manor Road, Tean, April

  • Improvements on New Haden Road, Cheadle, April

We’re carrying out repairs and improvements across the district over the coming weeks, making a difference to communities across the Staffordshire Moorlands. The work usually includes surfacing and repairs to the road, footways and kerbs, signals and sometimes replacing manhole covers and grids too. Repairs are scheduled as part of our annual programme, or they can be priorities put forward by your local county councillor.

While work takes place, we do - unfortunately - need to put temporary short-term closures in place, so we ask that you bear with us during these times.  The following improvements are due to take place in the coming weeks:

  • Highways improvements in Dilhorne, Cheadle and Werrington - including work on Huntley Road, Rakeway Road and Dilhorne Road.

  • Preparation work for the resurfacing of the A520 Leek Road, from Moorville Hall to Cheddleton, will start in January. This will include work at Cellarhead and Wetley Rocks and will be carried out during off-peak hours to help minimise disruption.

  • Highway improvements - including fixing potholes - on the A52 Kingsley Road, from Leek Road in Cheadle to Barnfields Lane in Kingsley, will start on 21 January.

  • Crews continue to carry out drainage works on Greenway Bank road to clear and remove debris from the drainage system behind Bemersley by Biddulph Household Waste Recycling Centre.

  • Some structural repairs to the road over the Knypersley reservoir dam have also taken place. Highways crews have also taken the opportunity to fix some potholes on the road while it was closed, which will help minimise future disruption.

Other non-council works include:

  • Severn Trent Water repairs to damaged infrastructure on the A522 Tape Street in Cheadle will start in January. Openreach will also be carrying out repairs to their infrastructure on the road at the same time, which should help reduce future disruption.
