Staffordshire Moorlands District Council have unveiled its preferred option to develop both the indoor and outdoor markets located on the High Street in Cheadle.
Last autumn the Council purchased the long-established market whose main buildings needed investment. The building had no heating system, was poorly ventilated and lacked adequate toilets, although it did have great character and held a fond place in the memory of many local people.

Officers from the regeneration team at the district council outlined a preference for a new market that will focus on food and beverage and produce at Cheadle Town Council meeting yesterday evening, 8th September 2025.
Located in the middle of the town, the market is framed by a Georgian terraced building and will be designed to complement the heritage of Cheadle and respect the town centre’s conservation area.
A number of stalls in the indoor market hall would provide a combination of food and beverage and retail spaces with indoor seating and further stalls in an arcade area. The design will reflecting the market’s original character, and a separate pop-up outdoor market will also be created.
The preferred option follows a period of consultation with traders, the town council, local businesses, and residents who completed a survey or attended a drop-in session, and interviews held with other key stakeholders a few months ago.
The survey showed strong support for keeping a market. Respondents expressed a desire for more food and beverage options, artisan and craft products, community and event spaces. Additionally an enhanced appearance, and longer operating hours into the evenings to boost the night-time economy.
Councillor Darren Price, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Planning and Regeneration, said:
"The consultant’s findings have convinced us that the market has a great future, and the architect’s eye-catching illustration shows what could be achieved."
"We hope this will eventually become a destination in its own right, just as Leek’s redeveloped Market Halls has successfully become after opening last winter."
Updates on its development will be given over the coming months.
