Saturday the 16th of November saw Cheadle Town Centre officially enter the countdown to Christmas with the annual Christmas light switch-on. There was no disappointment with the number of people in attendance as many of our 15,000 residents joined the festivities.
From 2 pm onwards, when the High Street was closed to traffic, there was plenty to see and do. Market stalls filled the Market Square, Greyhound Walk, and were dotted around the High Street too. Stalls were selling lovely food, vintage cider, and festive fayre, charity fundraising and information stalls like Cheadle Lions, Girl Guides, Team Cheadle, and Allotments Society, and of course stalls selling gifts for Christmas time. Many shops had special events and stayed open into the evening, some hosting stalls outside their usual premises.
The Town Crier called the way to activities and the arrival of special guests like Spider-Man and Tinker Bell. Christmas music entertained crowds throughout, with live performers and real Christmas deer. Prancer & Dancer had been given the day off to meet with Cheadle folk and would be returning to help Santa the following day. Oakley's farm provided for their needs and informed crowds about reindeer.
Jim Plant came with his donkey, a brass band donning Santa outfits, and many more worked hard to make the day truly memorable for young and old. A special thanks go to the police who kept things orderly and Team Cheadle for organising the event and all their hard work on the day.
