The weather forecast threatened rain, but this did not affect the crowds of Cheadle residents and visitors turning up to celebrate at our town's regular Carnival Event. This three day event started on Friday with a "Rave On The Rec" event, a Cheadle Carnival first. Saturday celebrations kicked off with a traditional parade through the town which ended at Tean Road Memorial Ground (the Rec). Here visitors enjoyed many activities. Events concluded on Sunday with more celebrations, live music and stalls.
Almost every aspect of Cheadle life was represented, from the Army Cadets, local Scout and Girl Guiding Groups, Young Farmers, schools and swim club. Children particularly had lots to enjoy such as the loud car horns and spectacle of the parade. Barbie and Spider Man were in attendance. Parents told COGNEWS that the Carnival bonds our town together as a community. They are not wrong. There was clapping and great excitement from the crowds for the entire 20 minutes it took the parade to pass by.
Organising an event of this size is no easy feat, the roads were closed with military precision thanks to the expert work of the carnival committee. Everyone was in good spirits even high street motorists were patient with proceedings.
Following the parade, the crowds moved on to the Memorial Ground where there was a traditional funfair, many stalls, and live music. Stalls offered a wide variety of activities and items for sale. A couple of our many favourites were: Cheadle Lions coconut shy, and St Giles the Abbot's tent selling lovely Cheadle Moon Cards.
The photos below show just a snapshot of the fun and joy of the event. Talking with some of the lady stallholders they had very much enjoyed the Rave on the Rec the evening before.
This is a mammoth task involving much fund raising, vision and collaboration. It is a huge traditional success for our town too. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all those involved in making this happen, and if you'd like to get involved in creating the next one, we're sure the Carnival Committee would love to hear from you.
