Can SIDs Help Cure Cheadle's Traffic Safety Problems?

One of the biggest challenges drivers face, especially in rural areas that they don't know well, is knowing what speed they should be doing as they approach towns and villages.

Many modern cars have ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) - the little road sign which tells you the current speed limit, but they are not always accurate. Get it wrong, and you could receive a fine or, worse, cause an accident. Nothing can make up for that local road knowledge, this is where SIDs Speed Indicator Devices can prove really useful.

SIDs work by displaying a vehicle’s speed in real time, encouraging drivers to slow down and comply with local limits. It's a positive traffic management approach which saves lives.

Currently, Cheadle doesn't have them, and there is a local resident who is campaigning to see SIDs installed to help drivers, pedestrians, and other road users stay safe.

Plans for Cheadle SIDs are being put forward for installation on key approach roads into the town, targeting areas previously identified as having speeding concerns, with ongoing monitoring to assess their effectiveness. The Department for Transport and the Road Safety Foundation show that these devices are an effective and low-cost way to cut speeding and reduce the risk of accidents—particularly on roads where speed limits drop as drivers enter built-up areas.

Each device costs around £2,700, and our campaigner is looking to pay for the devices with funding from community donations and sponsorship from local businesses.

The Cheadle campaigner told COGNEWS, “Reducing vehicle speeds is one of the most important steps we can take to improve road safety. These devices provide a highly visible reminder to drivers and will help make our streets safer for everyone.”

The proposal is being put forward in a direct response to community concerns and previous accidents to promote safer roads across the town.
