Continued Accidents Plague Cheadle Black Spot

The Huntsman in Cheadle has been campaigning for junction improvements on the A521 and Brookhouse Road and Draycott Cross Road for several years now. You may well have spotted their A-board sign which reports the number of days since the last accident in the past; well, it's back.

We visited The Huntsman one day last week when the sign said "1 Day since last accident" to find out more.

We spoke with the landlord on duty, who told us that it will take a death before the dangers of the junction with Draycott Road are realised. He explained that some drivers slow down at this junction, only to be overtaken by the car behind, which can then cause an accident.

COGNEWS examined the junction and noted that the permanent white stop line had almost completely worn away, this is a busy junction leading to the industrial estate and used by many lorries. The temporary warning sign, placed to warn drivers to slow down has been removed. There is also only one new stop sign at the junction instead of the customary two.

Additional confusion for drivers coming from the Draycott Cross Road route arises because there are sets of instructions as you approach, along with distracting signage. Should you stop, or continue at 30 or 40 mph?

Traffic levels have increased in the town and will increase further with new housing developments and much needed boosts of visitors to improve the local economy.

Please write to COGNEWS with your experience of the junction and your views on what should be done. We hope these photos illustrate the problem and we wish all our readers a safe journey when driving through Cheadle.
