A dispute has erupted on social media involving councillors, developers, and the public over the postponed opening of the new Aldi Store in Cheadle. The controversy seems to focus on ensuring safe access to the store, which is situated near a known accident blackspot.

Safety must always be prioritised, and Aldi's arrival in Cheadle is positive news for residents and visitors, offering much-needed jobs and eagerly anticipated by many.

Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said: “We have been working with Aldi and their representatives for some time on this issue, and have gone above and beyond to help them resolve this. This includes having a dedicated officer to examine their paperwork and ensure the proposed scheme is appropriate. Previous Aldi schemes in Staffordshire have taken on average 12 months to deliver from submission to the agreement being sealed.

"Ultimately, we need to ensure that what is delivered on site in terms of highway works is fit for purpose for the next 15-20 years, and creates minimal disruption for local people. We have standards that we won't compromise on, and we expect Aldi and other developers to meet those standards. Aldi must also work within our agreed timescales for booking space to do this work, and have had a number of months in which to do this.

"We will continue to work with them to ensure any issues are resolved in a timely way."

Cheadle County, District & Town Councillor Gary Bentley told COGNEW

"No one wants Aldi to open more than me. I've lived on that corner for over 20 years, and in that area my whole life, so I know this road like the back of my hand. It was one of my ideas to get a supermarket down there when I spoke to the owner of the then gate factory. He contacted Aldi, Aldi wanted the land, everybody's happy."

"Aldi came along to the town council, and the only concern anyone had was the traffic. When it came to district council planning, I spoke in favour of the development; the only concern raised was again traffic. I did ask for a bus service from Cheadle to the new Aldi store because it's a long walk from the other side of Cheadle."

"The Highways department suggested that the entrance be created on Brookhouse Way. Aldi's preference was from the main road, and this was all agreed. Unfortunately, and I don't understand why, Aldi hasn't yet submitted all the permits to dig up the road for the required road widening. This is a relatively straightforward job and the only reason that the project is slightly delayed. These agreements were all passed two years ago before I was a county councillor."

"I'm struggling to understand why people think I wouldn't want the Aldi store open. The building is built, I'll be across there myself at least a couple of times each week, so I'm looking forward to it like everyone else."

"I did ask if we could have a footbridge by the bridge because every night I see people coming from the factories trying to walk or cycle around that busy piece of road. So we asked for a footbridge from the Huntsman to the Aldi side, similar to the one on Tean Road by the vets. Unfortunately, two main sewer pipes run too close to the development, and so a bridge would not be possible. We pushed really hard for this to happen to keep people safe, but unfortunately, current law does not allow Severn Trent to agree to this."

"I can't wait for Aldi to open and can't understand why anyone would think I want to delay it. It's upsetting for my family to see negative comments about me on social media, especially as I'm not able to see them myself, and because the groups are closed to me, I'm not able to share my knowledge of issues like this with the public. I am disappointed that some of it has come from councillors who were on the planning committee at the time when the development was passed, so they know firsthand what the issues are."

We have asked Aldi for a comment and will update you once we obtain further information.
