
Sometimes it's difficult to know how to access the type of health support we need when we are faced with an emergency or urgent need. How do we know where to go for help? Following our successful. meeting with NHS England last month, COGNEWS is able to share the following information.
What is Urgent Care?
This is for an illness or injury that needs attention quickly but is not life-threatening.
What to do:
Call 111 for advice or an appointment. Examples of when you might need this type of care are:
sprains and strains
possible broken bones
minor head injuries
cuts that need stitches
minor burns & scales\feverish illnesses
abdominal (tummy) pain
urgent mental health concerns
Walk-in Centres is available at:
Haywood hospital Stoke-onTrent Mon- Sun, 7am - 9.30pm
Minor Injuries Units are available at:
Leek Moorlands Community Hospital Hours 9am - 5pm
County Hospital Children's MIU
Stafford Mon-Sun 8am-10pm
What is Emergency Care?
This is help for life-threatening conditions, If someone's in immediate danger because of an injury or severe health problem, they need emergency care quickly. This is available at emergency departments (ED's) These are also known as accident and emergency (A&E) or casualty.
What to do:
Call 999 or go to ED. Examples of when you might need this type of care are:
signs of a heart attack
sings of a stroke
sever difficulty breathing
seizures
heavy bleeding (blood spraying or puring)
choking
rapid swelling of lips, tongue or mouth
severe injuries after serious accident
