The number of people enjoying the new state-of-the-art health and wellbeing centre in Leek has already passed the 43,000 mark since it re-opened, as MyActive Leek, in August.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council led the project to redevelop the former Brough Park Leisure Centre which, together with the rejuvenation of the town’s indoor markets and the work to modernise the Nicholson Institute, forms part of the multi-million pound regeneration of Leek funded in part by the UK Government.

In the last couple of months alone, the centre has welcomed around 43,275 people back to enjoy the range of classes, gym and studio facilities and equipment, new pools, the soft-play area, the café and the outdoor Active Environments amenities.

Based on current numbers, around 300,000 people are expected to use the centre in the next 12 months – a figure welcomed by the Council as part of its commitment to supporting residents to be active, move more, and improve their physical and mental health.

Olympian Abbie Wood unveiled a plaque to officially open MyActive Leek.

It was officially opened last month by double Olympic and Commonwealth Games swimmer Abbie Wood who swam at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and Paris and at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow where she won three silver medals following previous success at the Birmingham games.

Unveiling a plaque to celebrate the occasion, Abbie described it as a full-circle moment having swum at Brough Park as a child and praised the investment in providing state-of-the-art pools, sporting and leisure facilities.

She was joined at the opening event by the Chairman of the Staffordshire Moorlands, Councillor Linda Malyon, Council Leader, Councillor Mike Gledhill and representatives from the funding partners, MyActive, local sports clubs, and education providers.

Councillor Mike Gledhill, Council Leader, said: “We’re proud of what we’ve delivered here – it’s a facility that is already proving to be a huge success and it’s fantastic to see that so many people have already taken the opportunity to experience it for themselves. If you haven’t yet visited, I’d encourage you to - I think you’ll be impressed!”

The redevelopment has been funded by UK Government, the District Council, Sport England through the National Lottery, and Salix who administered more than £1 million from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.

The redevelopment includes:

  • A new 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool and a larger teaching pool

  • A larger gym and second group exercise studio and a new, dedicated indoor cycling studio

  • A community wellness suite with space to expand referral based services

  • An indoor/soft adventure play area

  • New reception space with toilets, café seating and servery

Sport England provided further funding for the innovative Active Environments development in the area outside the centre.
