Last night, our editor Lori, went along to the Suffragettes Interactive Talk at Hales Hall, here's how it went.

The Grand Powder Room at Hales Hall

"I've been to Hales Hall quite a few times, but tonight's talk took place in an area I hadn't seen before - the Coach House. Situated tucked in to the left of the main hall, the Coach House is a sympathetically converted space. I ventured up the steep staircase towards the chatter and was delighted to see the narrow staircase opened out into a good-sized room with a projector set up to one wall and a good bar adjacent. The room was pleasantly filled with chatter as people got a drink and found a seat.

"I'll be talking more about the work of this great group in future articles, but for now let's think about the suffragettes. I believe I'm reasonably well-informed about the suffragette movement and UK women's history in general, but Steve Williams, our engaging speaker and former fire chief, made it a rather pleasant school day for me and I suspect for some others too. Steve has a lovely way of showing slides and video and asking the audience questions whilst giving over important facts.

"It's not just the facts, though; Steve talked about how the actions of over half a million women changed the course of history and started something vital around the world. It was the lovely touches of things you'll remember, like the connection of his own family to one of the leaders and the images of real census and other information about some of the leaders involved. After the official talk, people stayed and chatted about the topic; it was, in fact, a living history and one that I'm sure we'll remember fondly."
