A Child of Mine and the Wellsprings Methodist Church work together to bring Baby Loss Awareness Week to the Moorlands.

A Child of Mine is a Staffordshire based charity that was founded in 2013 by Gayle Routledge after the death of her 2-year-old son, Lewis, to cancer. The charity has continued to support hundreds of bereaved families each year since, who have experienced the death of a child or baby of any age, including adult children, and under any circumstance. Their support services are free of charge and can be accessed via one2one over the phone sessions, in person in the comfort of their family support room or parents can be sign posted to one of the circumstantial peer support groups.
The charity regularly supports parents that have experienced miscarriage, ectopic pregnancies, late pregnancy loss, stillbirth and neonatal death and feel it is important to provide those within the community that have experienced this heartbreaking loss with opportunities to remember and safely talk about their babies in addition to the charity’s support groups and services.
In response to the National Baby Loss Awareness Week campaign, 9th-15th October, A Child of Mine and the Wellspring Methodist Church, Cheadle partnered together to bring a ‘Wave of Light’ service to the Staffordshire Moorlands on the 15th of October. Anyone that has been affected by pregnancy or baby loss was invited to attend a beautifully touching service, composed and delivered by Reverend Julie Hassall, to remember all babies gone to soon, which included emotional readings from bereaved parents, gentle music for reflection, the lighting of candles and the opportunity to write messages of love to hang on a memory tree.
After the service there was an opportunity to seek support from one of the charity's peer emotional supporters and guests received a warm and welcoming reception from the Church’s staff and volunteers with the provision of refreshments. One bereaved parent said, ‘It was such a lovely service, so gentle, so needed, thank you’.

It is hoped that arranging events such as this, supporting the various campaigns that centre around bereavement, and the traumatic grief associated with the loss of a child, they can help unite the bereaved parent community, reduce self-isolation and help to protect or improve mental health. A Child of Mine and the Methodist Church want to remind everyone that they are not alone and to reach out for support if or when it is needed.
