Lori's Letter: A Glimpse Inside and What's Ahead for COGNEWS

Updated: Jan 4

Hello everyone,

I'd like to extend my best wishes to you for an amazing 2025 in whatever you choose to pursue! I always enjoy taking stock between Christmas and New Year; it's a time to reflect on and celebrate the successes of the past year, and make plans for the upcoming year. Do check out our New Year, New You feature from Find Bliss, a local company dedicated to help live your best life. This year for me has offered much to celebrate, as our small community connection project has evolved into daily digital news and a monthly print edition, fostering many wonderful connections within our community. I'm incredibly proud of our small team's accomplishments and grateful to everyone who has supported and continues to support us on this journey. We sincerely hope our work will keep benefiting the residents, organisations, and visitors of Cheadle and the surrounding area.

We want to really showcase the value in our region for everyone. It's a challenge to cover so many areas in a small space, for sure. We continue to debate long and hard whether we could go to A4 size, which we believe will serve our public better. Until we've built up our income and volunteer network, we'll stick to A5 and hope to move to A4 in the summer. Instead, we've created a more pictorial style, more interesting pages, and a glossy cover. We will be changing the font too, making it easier to read for many. We've finalised how the new COGBOXES will look and are debating whether these should be cashless, as theft does sadly seem to be an issue. Since an A4 print will cost £1.77 to produce against a cover price of £1, magazine theft is not something that can continue. Postal subscription, online payments/donations, and collection boxes, we hope, will solve this problem.

This month, we are introducing several new features to our publication. Following the pensioners' fair organised by our new MP, Dame Karen Bradley, we will continue to cover how to enjoy retirement in Cheadle. Our "Dearly Departed" section will now be part of "Friends & Family," a space for residents to share wedding and engagement announcements, births, and other significant celebrations or achievements. We welcome readers' letters and will address the issues raised in the best ways possible. Be sure to check out "At the Weekend," "Discover," and "What's On," which highlight our beautiful area. This month's news articles include a new community centre development, a new banking hub opening, and revelations about Blythe Colours' secret WWII work. Don't miss "New Year, New You" and a guide to staying well this winter from SCC.
