Is There a Lack of Recognition in Staffordshire Moorlands?

Is There a Lack of Recognition in Staffordshire Moorlands?

New Year and birthday honours are awarded by the King following recommendations by the Prime Minister or senior government ministers. The honours lists include awards for people who have made significant achievements in public life or committed themselves to serving and helping Britain. They are diverse and open to all. This is why it is so disappointing that of the 158 pages of people who received an award this New Year (2025), not one is listed for the Moorlands.

We know there are a good many local people who work tirelessly for our area, often without personal reward, it's disappointing that the closest New Year Honour for 2025 is a lady from Stoke-on-Trent. Whilst COGNEWS is delighted for her achievement and those of all the others who made the list, we can't help but wonder why there are no Moorlands achievers? Do Moorlands people prefer to do their work more privately, do they prefer not to accept the award, or have they simply been overlooked?

Honours are traditionally kept confidential until the official announcement, with lists provided to media outlets under embargo.

Whilst we can't change the past and don't seek to interfere in people's personal values, we would like to ensure that everyone is aware of how they can recommend people for future awards. Members of the public can recommend people for an award. by following the link. These nominations typically make up about a quarter of all recommendations, and whilst our hardworking Moorlanders may prefer a life without letters and medals, we want to ensure that those who deserve the honour are nominated for their achievements.

This year's list includes Lee Castleton, Seema Misra, Chris Head, and Jo Hamilton, who were honoured for services to justice. These brave former sub-postmasters have said they will fight on after being made OBEs in the New Year Honours list. Other recipients include former England manager Gareth Southgate, Sadiq Khan, Stephen Fry, and children's author Jacqueline Wilson.

Warmest congratulations to all recipients.
