How Can We Help Our Wildlife Prepare for Winter?
Just as we prepare for the winter months, so do many animals and birds. Our lovely hedgehog friend "The Ideas Hog" at COG WOODLAND NEWS is preparing for his seasonal party.

Here's what we can do to help him prepare for his winter sleep known as hibernation.
Towards the end of autumn, hedgehogs consider the best places to build nests. Even in Britain, if there is enough food and the air temperature is not too low, hedgehogs need not hibernate. You can create wild corners and log piles to provide natural food and shelter.
To supplement their natural diet, you can also offer meaty cat or dog food, cat biscuits, or meat-based hedgehog food. Always supply plenty of clean water and ensure bowls and feeding areas are kept clean.
You can make or buy a hedgehog home to offer a hibernation site that is safer from predators in the winter. It may also be used as a nesting box for a mother and her hoglets in the warmer months.
