Businesses across the UK are being encouraged to prepare for significant changes to Companies House accounts filing requirements, set to come into effect from April 2028. Introduced under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, the reforms aim to improve transparency, accuracy and trust in company data, while helping to tackle economic crime and modernise the UK’s corporate reporting framework.

The new measures will require all companies to file their annual accounts using commercial software only, with paper and web-based filing options being phased out. Small companies and micro-entities will also need to submit profit and loss accounts, although they will have the option to keep this information off the public register. Additional changes include removing abridged accounts, strengthening audit exemption statements, and ensuring accounts are submitted as a complete package. With 21 months to prepare, businesses are urged to review their processes early and ensure they have the right systems in place ahead of the transition.
