Sunday the 10th of November saw a large number of people gather at the Tape street car park for a march to St Giles the Abbot Church where a 2pm service was held. Army Cadets, Scouts, Guides, many Charitable Organisations from within the town, Town and District Councillors, as well as many local residents attended the gathering.
We were greeted at St Giles not by the Rev Higgs, but the Bishop of Staffordshire. The sermon was relevant to both the times we live in; with war in Europe and the Middle East, and reflective for Remembrance Sunday. In Cheadle we never forget the people who died in wars and all their names were read out so that we would remember them. After the service everyone from the church marched to the Tean Road Memorial Ground where wreaths were laid by members of the groups in attendance. The weather turned, making the event rather damp.
Team Cheadle and the Carnival team closed the roads to enable the march to take place. It was viewed by many residents who turned out lining the streets to pay their respects. Cheadle is a town that cares about world troubles in the past and the present. We'd wish Rev Garry Higgs of St Giles the Abbot a speedy recovery from his illness.
There was also a service for animals, held at the Tape Street Car Park Memorial. Horses from Cheadle were collected in the market square and shipped out to the front in the first world war.
