Councils across England now required to collect food waste each week - the district council has announced that preparations are underway to commence this service in the Moorlands at the end of June. Residents will need to present any food waste separately from garden waste.

At the same time, the Council and its waste and recycling collection partner Alliance Environmental Services (AES) will be introducing an opt-in subscription scheme for collecting household garden waste. Everyone wishing to continue to benefit from this service will be able to register and pay the £46 annual subscription fee when the portal goes live at the end of April.

The District Council, like many other Councils across the country, has decided to introduce a fee for anyone who wants to continue with this service.

Councillor Charlotte Atkins, Cabinet Member for Services, said: “To help people prepare, we’ll be issuing food waste caddies to all households from mid-May which will include full details of what the changes mean and what people need to do. The opt-in garden waste collection subscription scheme will also start at the end of June and the portal where people can sign up will be available from the end of April."

"The Council and AES want to make it as easy as possible for everyone to adapt to the new collections and will be writing to all households from the end of this month. Our waste and customer services teams will provide support to anyone who needs it as the changes take effect. No-one needs to change how they present their waste and recycling at the moment, but changes are coming.”

The Council will also be subsidising composting bins for residents who don’t want to subscribe to the garden waste collection service but who do want to manage their waste at home. More details will be available about this in the coming weeks.
