Himalayan Balsam which plagues Cecilly Brook
Himalayan Balsam which plagues Cecilly Brook

Himalayan Balsam is an invasive weed which is fast growing and spreads quickly invading wet habitat at the expense of native plants. One plant can produce up to 800 seeds which are explosively spread and viable for several years. It dies back in winter, leaving the banks of rivers and streams subject to erosion so it needs to be controlled.

Cecilly Brook is affected by this plant and the Friends of Cecilly Brook and Hales Hall Pool are aiming to eradicate it from the Brook. They have a balsam pulling programme for 2024 and volunteers old and new are encouraged to join in.

They meet in the South Moorlands Leisure Centre car park off Ashbourne Rd. Times and dates are specified as follows:

Dates are as follows:

Saturday 15th June @ 10am

Thursday 4th July @ 6pm

Thursday 25th July @ 6pm

Saturday 3rd August @ 10am

Thursday 15th August @ 6pm

Volunteers are advised to wear long sleeves, long trousers & sturdy footwear & gloves to protect against the nettles. Sessions last between 1 and 2 hours.
