The scouting organisation has been responsible for building strength in both personal and practical skills for young people for over 100 years, and I was sad to hear that our town's scouting group was struggling, so I met up with their scout leader, Andy Ellerton, and his team to find out why.

Assistance Needed for Cheadle 3rd Scouts

Andy told me that there are currently two big issues facing the local group. The first one is bringing the building in line with current needs. They've managed to install emergency lighting and a new fire exit, but they still need heating and hot water, repairs to windows, and also some work on the side buildings.

A call is being made to local funders, philanthropists, and companies who might be able to help with some aspect of getting this work done to secure the building for future use. They are also seeking help with getting the garden tidied up. This might make a lovely collaborative project.

The other issue Cheadle 3rd is experiencing is a shortage of leaders and helpers. Andy, Jo, Sammy, and Tammy would like to ask local people, particularly young parents, if they would like to help with the scout group in some capacity. This would allow better experiences for our youngsters, including expanding the number of places available. This can be very rewarding, looks great on your CV, and you learn new skills too. One of the best ways to improve your mental health is by doing something for others, and this is a fun way to get involved in your local community.

Scouting helps our youngsters become connected, skilled adults with activities such as camping, first aid, and computing being among the many options children can experience. The badge reward system is still strong within the organisation, which builds great memories and skills for the children and everyone else involved.
