Big Plans For The New Community Centre Revealed At Afternoon Tea

Big Plans For The New Community Centre Revealed At Afternoon Tea
The New Wellspring Methodist Church and Community Centre for Cheadle

Over 100 people gathered last month to enjoy a lovely afternoon tea at Wellspring Methodist Church on Chapel Street. This was no ordinary Saturday afternoon gathering, it was the official reveal of the amazing plans for this old building at the heart of our town.

Wellspring has been at the heart of our community for many years hosting both Moorlands Home Link and Chapel Street Nursery for many years. In addition to more events and meetings than you can count over all those years. The building is old and tired, it's not listed and so it made good economic sense to transform this into an amazing space fit for 21st century Cheadle life. It's been in the planning stage for the best part of two years, a real labour of love led by the Wellspring Minister Rev Julie Hassall. It was difficult to obtain the permissions needed to build and they will lose the car park, but there will be indoor and outdoor spaces to thrive and host many of the things a growing town needs.

This event was not just about cake and plans. Julie is determined to break ground in the spring of 2025 - a few short months away. In addition to all the logistics of such an ambitious build, the money to pay for it must be found whilst keeping existing services and spaces intact. The afternoon tea event was the start of a big fundraising push.

It's unlikely that anyone has a spare £750,000 down the back of the sofa, but we could all share something, do something to raise funds, or know someone who can share a little more. It would actually work out at under £55 per Cheadle resident, a small price to pay to have a community allotment, repair cafe, community coffee shop and spaces for things such as cinema, lantern making and our own COG meetings. The great news is Julie has made substantial headway in gathering funds so far and the Church is well on the way to realising it's ambitious goal.
